Chapter Nine

After Abigail returned with her own matcha latte and Emma’s sickeningly sweet cinnamon toast monstrosity—complete with whipped cream and breakfast cereal sprinkles—she somehow managed to settle in for what almost felt like a normal work day.

A little after lunch she looked up to see Mr. Boyd heading through the lobby with Ms. Lind at his side. Abigail couldn’t help but wonder if Mako had gotten what he needed from the recording yet. If not, would Boyd being out mess with his plans? Should she even want him to succeed at this point? After all, she was free of him.

Her hand strayed to her pockets where she still had the earbuds he’d given her. She should’ve thrown them out like he suggested, but it seemed so—final.

Stop being an idiot, she told herself. He’s a supervillain. I should be glad to be rid of him. I shouldn’t even have agreed to have him come teach me tonight. Why did I say yes to that? What’s wrong with me?

She opened her desk drawer and aimlessly organized her office supplies. She was almost out of post-it notes. Maybe she should make a run to the supply closet. She shut the drawer and eyed her noise canceling headphones. Weirdly she hadn’t wanted to wear them at all today. Yeah, little bursts and blips of color popped into her view with the dumb elevator music that constantly droned in the lobby or when a particularly loud patron entered, but she didn’t mind as much as she once had.

Maybe if I learn complete control over my powers I can start doing things I’ve been avoiding for years. Go out to real movies. Public places without headphones. Listen to music for fun.

Where would she even start with music? Definitely not that awful lobby stuff. Anything but that.

Maybe Mako will have some suggestions.

The thought came unbidden, and she gritted her teeth. No, she was not going to think about Mako anymore today. She’d agreed to one more lesson and then it was over. She was never going to see that reckless, time bomb of a supervillain ever again.

Five o’clock hit, and the security guard locked the front doors. Abigail massaged the space between her eyes before gathering her personal items, waving to Emma across the room, and slipping out a rear employee entrance.

The ride home was uneventful. Just as she parked in front of her apartment building, a patrol car pulled up and idled a little ways from her. Her throat tightened. What if Mako chose this moment to come by?

She got out of her car, and the officer rolled down her window, waving her over. Abigail recognized her as the one from the day after the robbery.

“Sorry to keep bringing you back here.” Abigail gave an awkward laugh.

“No trouble. I guess we’re just supposed to swing by every now and then to make sure nothing is amiss. I’m assuming you know how to dial 911 if anything goes wrong in the meantime.” The officer grinned.

“Yeah, I’m good there.
